Topping Off the Pool More Than Usual?

An inch or two of water loss a week can be normal evaporation, especially during a Bellflower summer. More than that, or water loss that doesn't slow down when the pump is off, usually means an actual leak, not the weather. That's the call we get most: a rising water bill, a pool that needs topping off every few days, or a soft or sinking spot in the surrounding deck.

Bellflower's backyard pools mostly date to the same 1950s and 60s tract-home boom as the houses around them, which means a lot of original plumbing and aging equipment pads. Older skimmer gaskets and return fittings are the parts most likely to fail first, well before the pool shell itself develops a real crack.

Refilling a leaking pool shows up on the meter before it shows up at the tile line.

Wet Spots Near the Equipment Pad

Often points to a return or plumbing leak rather than the shell itself.

A leak traced to the plumbing lines running to and from the equipment pad sometimes shares the same underlying cause as a general water line leak elsewhere on the property. This is particularly true in homes where ground movement has stressed rigid pipe over the years.

The Method.

How We Actually Find the Leak.

We start with a bucket test to confirm the loss is a real leak and not just evaporation. From there we narrow it down with sonar equipment and dye injection at the usual failure points: skimmer bodies, return fittings, light niches, the main drain, and the shell itself. Most leaks in Bellflower's older backyard pools show up at a skimmer or return fitting rather than a shell crack, which is also the easier and cheaper repair.

If the leak is on the plumbing side rather than the shell, we can usually trace and repair it without draining the pool at all. A shell crack or a leak under the deck sometimes requires a partial drain, which we'll tell you upfront, not after the fact.

Common Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover a pool leak?

Usually not. A pool leak is generally treated as gradual wear rather than sudden damage, so most standard policies exclude it. Some specialty pool or umbrella policies handle it differently, which is worth checking with your insurer directly.

How much pool water loss is actually normal?

Roughly a quarter inch a day is typical evaporation in warm weather. More than that, especially if it doesn't slow with the pump off, points to a leak.

Will you have to drain my pool?

Usually not. Most leaks we find are on the plumbing or fitting side and get repaired with the pool full.

Are there rules about leaving a pool leak unrepaired in California?

Current California drought conservation rules discourage wasting water, and an unrepaired leak is exactly that. We can't cite every local ordinance, but fixing it promptly is the safe move either way.

Do you work on above-ground and vinyl pools too?

Our focus is in-ground gunite and plaster pools, which make up most of what we see in Bellflower's backyards.

How long does a typical detection visit take?

Most bucket tests and sonar sweeps are completed in one to two hours. A repair, once the leak is located, is often finished the same visit if parts are on the truck.

Can a slab leak in the house actually show up as pool water loss?

Not usually. A dropping pool level almost always traces back to the pool's own shell, plumbing, or fittings rather than the home's supply lines, but if both are happening at once we'll check both systems.

Does a leaking pool affect my regular water bill much?

It can add up fast. A pool losing an inch a day works out to hundreds of gallons a week, which shows up clearly on the meter well before most homeowners notice the water line has dropped.
