Galvanized steel was the standard supply-line material through the 1950s and into the 60s, before copper and later PEX became far more common. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out, and the rust and mineral scale narrow the interior of the pipe gradually until flow drops below what the fixtures were designed for.

A magnet test on any exposed supply line near the water heater or under a sink is the third and most direct check: galvanized steel is magnetic, while copper and PEX are not.

Why PEX Holds Up Better.

PEX tubing became a practical alternative to copper and galvanized starting in the 1990s, and it's now the standard material for most residential repiping work. It's flexible, which means fewer joints and fittings where a leak could eventually start, and it's considerably more resistant to the kind of internal corrosion that eventually kills a galvanized line. A full repipe replaces every supply line from the main shutoff to each fixture, and in a typical 1,200 to 1,800 square foot Bellflower tract home, that's usually a one to two day job.

Some homes with additions built during the 1970s and 80s also have polybutylene pipe mixed in, a material that's no longer considered code-compliant and is worth replacing at the same time if a repipe is already happening.

If those checks confirm galvanized pipe and show meaningful pressure loss, the next step is usually a broader conversation about scope. That means checking whether the whole system shows similar wear, or whether it's concentrated in one section that got partially updated at some point and left the rest original. That distinction is what actually determines whether a full repipe or a smaller, targeted fix is the right call.

A Word on Timing.

There's No Perfect Moment, But There Is a Better One.

Waiting for a galvanized line to fail completely before repiping means dealing with an emergency, water damage, and a rushed decision all at once. Addressing it once the early signs show up is almost always the less disruptive and less expensive path, even though it can feel easier to put off when the house still technically has running water.

None of this means every symptom warrants immediate replacement. Plenty of galvanized homes limp along for years without a catastrophic failure. But knowing the pipe material, the pressure trend over time, and whether the corrosion is isolated or widespread gives you an actual, informed basis for the decision instead of just guessing at it randomly. A quick on-site check is usually enough to settle the question either way. It also costs far less than repairing a burst pipe after the fact.
